PROVIDENCE TOWNSHIP, OH — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a tragic crash that claimed the life of a Maumee woman and injured another cyclist Saturday morning in Lucas County.
According to troopers from the Toledo Post, the crash occurred at approximately 9:44 a.m. on South River Road near Yawberg Road in Providence Township.
Initial reports indicate that three bicyclists were riding eastbound along the edge line of the south side of the roadway when a westbound 2011 Mercedes-Benz E350 crossed the center line. The vehicle struck two of the cyclists before continuing off the south side of the road. The car eventually re-entered the roadway and came to rest.
One of the cyclists, 38-year-old Roseann Marie Peiffer of Maumee, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another cyclist, Gustav Caillaux Casalino Perez Velazco, 50, also of Maumee, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by EMS to the University of Toledo Medical Center. The third cyclist was not injured.
The driver of the Mercedes-Benz, identified as Kacey B. Hilton II, 18, of Grand Rapids, was evaluated on scene by EMS for non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities confirmed that all three bicyclists were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation. Assisting agencies included the Lucas County Sheriff’s Department, the Lucas County Coroner’s Office, Providence Township Fire & EMS, and Brett’s Towing.
