A small island just off the Lake Erie shoreline near Port Clinton is drawing attention after being placed on the real estate market with a multimillion-dollar price tag.

Known as Mouse Island, the roughly seven-acre property sits close to the Miller Ferry dock and has earned the nickname “the Hawaii of Ohio” for its unique location and lake views. The island gets its name from its mouse-like shape when viewed from above, though a future owner would have the option to rename it.

The property is listed by Jon Deegan and Kyle Recker of Howard Hanna. According to the listing agents, the island is currently undeveloped, with no utilities in place, and is zoned residential. They note that development possibilities could expand depending on discussions with local municipalities.

Potential uses floated by the agents include residential development, such as private homes or condominiums, and possibly other ventures like a resort or restaurant, subject to approvals.

Mouse Island also carries historical significance. Records from the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums show the island was once owned by Rutherford B. Hayes. In 1879, Hayes purchased the remaining ownership interests, and the island served as a retreat for the Hayes family for several generations. It was later sold to the current owners, who are now putting the island back on the market.

The asking price for Mouse Island is listed at $5 million, offering a rare opportunity to purchase a private island in Lake Erie just minutes from Ohio’s mainland.
