Toledo, Ohio — A former Toledo Police Department officer has been terminated after being convicted in a theft-related case involving a local Walmart store.
Police Chief Michael Troendle announced Monday that Gregory Long Jr. was dismissed following the conclusion of both his criminal case and an internal investigation into his off-duty conduct. The department determined he violated agency policies related to willful misconduct and conduct unbecoming an officer. His termination is effective immediately.
Long was originally charged with two counts of petty theft after authorities said he failed to properly scan merchandise during separate visits to the Walmart on Glendale Avenue in July. He was charged in August and later prohibited from entering Walmart stores.
In December, Long pleaded to a reduced charge of unauthorized use of property, a fourth-degree misdemeanor.
Department leadership stated that officers are expected to meet strict standards of integrity and professionalism, and disciplinary action is taken when those standards are not upheld.
