TOLEDO, Ohio — For countless Toledo-area families, a trip to Chuck E. Cheese meant birthday parties, arcade games, prize counters and singing animatronic characters. Now, one of those longtime traditions has come to an end.
The Chuck E. Cheese on Airport Highway has permanently closed after 33 years in business. The restaurant first opened in 1993, and company officials say the location is closing because its lease has expired. The Monroe Street location will remain open.
For many who grew up in the 1990s and early 2000s, the Airport Highway restaurant was more than a pizza place. It became the backdrop for birthday celebrations, family outings and first encounters with Munch’s Make Believe Band, the chain’s famous animatronic stage show featuring Chuck E. Cheese and his bandmates.
As the company modernized its restaurants over the years, many locations removed their animatronic performances in favor of newer entertainment options. That made Toledo’s Airport Highway restaurant one of the last places where families could still experience the classic stage show that generations remember.
The closure also leaves another vacancy along the Airport Highway corridor, an area that has seen several longtime businesses close in recent years. While no future plans for the building have been announced, community leaders have expressed interest in seeing new investment and redevelopment in the area.
