TOLEDO, Ohio — The future of one of Toledo’s longest-running institutions is uncertain after its parent company announced it is exploring the sale of The Blade.
Block Communications said Tuesday it will seek a buyer for the newspaper’s assets. If a sale cannot be completed, The Blade is expected to publish its final print and digital editions on Dec. 31, 2026.
The newspaper was founded in 1835, making it Toledo’s oldest continuously operating business. The Block family has owned the publication since 1926, when businessman Paul Block Sr. acquired the newspaper.
According to the company, the decision comes after years of ongoing financial losses that it says are no longer sustainable. The Blade currently employs 119 people.
No timeline has been announced for the sale process, and company officials say efforts to find a buyer are now underway. If a new owner is secured, publication would continue under new ownership.
