Wood County Could See Wind Chills as Low as -25°F
NORTHWEST OHIO – Residents across Northwest Ohio are bracing for an arctic blast that is expected to bring dangerously cold temperatures and life-threatening wind chills early next week. According to the National Weather Service, wind chill values will plummet Monday night into Tuesday morning, with Wood County facing a 97% chance of wind chills dropping below -15°F and potentially reaching as low as -25°F.
Daytime high temperatures on both Monday and Tuesday are forecasted to remain in the single digits, making for an extended period of bitter cold. Meteorologists warn that these extreme conditions pose significant safety risks, particularly for those who must be outside.
Extreme Cold Brings Increased Risks
Officials say the upcoming cold snap could have serious consequences, including an increased risk of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone exposed to the elements for even short periods.
The National Weather Service has also warned of infrastructure concerns, including frozen pipes, dead car batteries, and the potential for power outages. In extreme cold, residents often turn to alternative heating sources, which can increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and house fires.
Officials Urge Residents to Prepare
With the worst conditions expected early next week, emergency officials are urging residents to take precautions now. Suggested preparations include:
- Limiting outdoor exposure—those who must be outside should dress in layers and cover exposed skin.
- Checking home heating systems and insulating pipes to prevent freezing.
- Preparing a winter emergency kit in vehicles, including blankets, food, water, and extra batteries.
- Checking on vulnerable neighbors who may need assistance staying warm.
- Ensuring pets and livestock have adequate shelter and warmth.
Residents are also encouraged to familiarize themselves with how to shut off their water in case of frozen pipes and to take extra care when using space heaters or generators.
Dangerous Cold to Persist
Forecasters say the bitter cold is expected to last through mid-week, with wind chills remaining well below zero. Officials are closely monitoring the situation and will issue updates as needed.
