TOLEDO, Ohio — Fans of The Office have something new to look forward to—and this time, it’s got Toledo written all over it. NBCUniversal has officially announced The Paper, a mockumentary-style comedy set at a struggling Midwestern newspaper in Toledo called The Truth Teller. The show is slated to premiere this September on Peacock.
According to WTOL 11, the series picks up the mockumentary format made famous by The Office, but swaps out Scranton, Pennsylvania, for Toledo’s gritty newsroom landscape. Greg Daniels, the creative mind behind The Office, and Michael Koman, known for Nathan For You and Conan O’Brien’s late-night show, are teaming up to co-create and executive produce the series.
Among the confirmed cast are Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina, About Time), Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus), and returning Office favorite Oscar Nuñez. Additional cast includes Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, and Tim Key.
While plot details are still under wraps, NBC says the series follows the same documentary film crew as The Office, now chronicling the revival of a fictional Toledo newspaper.
Local pride is already front and center. The nonprofit group FilmToledo revealed on Facebook that it assisted producers by providing authentic Toledo brands and cultural references to ensure an accurate portrayal of the Glass City. “It’s been fun to keep this secret, but we’re glad it’s public now!” the organization shared.
Even beloved local business Jupmode, known for its 419-themed apparel, teased that its gear will make a cameo on the show.
As September draws closer, Toledoans will be keeping an eye out for local nods, inside jokes—and maybe even a few ducks. The Paper is shaping up to be not just a new comedy series, but a love letter to life in the 419.
