TOLEDO, Ohio — A University of Toledo Medical Center surgical resident is facing multiple felony charges after investigators say he illegally obtained abortion-inducing drugs and tried to force them on a woman he was dating.
A Lucas County Grand Jury indicted Dr. Hassan Abbas, 32, on charges of abduction, tampering with evidence, unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug, disrupting public services, identity fraud, and deception to obtain a dangerous drug.
According to the State Medical Board of Ohio, Abbas began a relationship with the woman—identified as “Patient 1”—after separating from his wife in late 2024. When she told him she was pregnant, investigators say Abbas ordered Mifepristone and Misoprostol using his estranged wife’s personal information without her knowledge.
The board alleges that after the drugs arrived, the woman stayed at his home and later reported waking up to Abbas restraining her and attempting to force crushed pills into her mouth. When she tried calling 911, he allegedly took her phone and ended the call. She sought treatment at a hospital soon afterward.
In a later interview, Abbas admitted to ordering the drugs, using his wife’s identity, giving the woman the crushed medication, and throwing out the remaining pills, though he claimed she agreed to take them.
His medical license was suspended on Nov. 5, and UTMC placed him on administrative leave. The alleged victim has since obtained a protective order. Her attorney says more charges could still be considered as the case continues.
